MULTI-DISCIPLINARY EXCELLENCE

Our approach to cancer care is best defined by our unique Cancer Management Teams (CMTs). We believe that cancer is a complex enemy; conquering it demands the coming together of the finest experts in specific cancer groups.

Each CMT, at the Apollo Proton Cancer Centre, is made up of specialists who straddle diverse disciplines like Surgery, Radiation & Medical Oncology, Pathology, Rehabilitation and several others. A CMT is further fortified by world-class support staff like nurses, dieticians, therapists and clinical trial coordinators. These experts play a pivotal role in drawing up the treatment blueprint based on vast experience, the unique needs of the patients and the collective expertise of the team.

Head & Neck Cancer

USING THE MOST ADVANCED TREATMENT MODALITIES AND EXPERTISE TO COUNTER THE GROWING MENACE OF HEAD & NECK CANCERS

Head & Neck Cancers are among the commonest cancers in India. With over 5,50,000 incidences of Head & Neck annually, we are already in the top few in terms of cases reported. As much as 80 per cent of the causation is attributed to tobacco consumption, while 75 per cent is due to alcohol.

The Global Adult Tobacco Survey India, conducted in 2009-10, revealed that 35% of adults used tobacco. Tobacco-related cancers are expected to constitute 30% of the total cancer burden by 2020.

Treating cancers that occur in the head and neck requires a high degree of expertise to achieve the best possible outcome. APCC’s diverse Head and Neck Cancer Management Team (CMT) of very experienced internationally acclaimed team of surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, dental oncologists, plastic surgeons and rehab team collaborate to design your customized treatment plan, incorporating the most advanced therapies that have the best outcomes with most minimal impact on the quality of life.

About Head and Neck Cancers

Most of these cancers are squamous cell carcinomas — malignant growths that begin in the flat squamous cells that form the inner lining in many parts of the head and neck.

Head and Neck Cancer Risk Factors

Using tobacco, which includes smoking cigarettes, cigars or pipes, chewing tobacco and using snuff, is the single largest risk factor for head and neck cancer. Other factors that can raise your risk of developing head and neck cancer include:

There are situations when Head & Neck cancers do not manifest any early warning signs but typically they are associated with a few common symptoms. It is always advisable to consult a doctor when any of these symptoms persist. When patients respond to unusual signs by seeking early medical evaluation, their outcome is dramatically improved. Some of the most common symptoms of head and neck cancer are listed below.

Our diagnostic teams run a battery of tests to test for Head & Neck Cancers. We use the latest in multi modal diagnostics to evaluate treatment pathways and reach a prognosis that promises the highest efficacy.

Treatment for head and neck cancer at APCC is centred on surgical and advanced radiation therapy techniques to eliminate the disease and at the same time minimizing adverse side effects, the specialists in the CMT customize each treatment plan to promote faster healing and achieve higher cure rates. The newest technologies focus on organ preservation and voice restoration, even for the most advanced tumours.

Surgery

Surgery is done to remove the tumour and restore your appearance and health.

Radiation therapy

TomoTherapy:

Our TomoTherapy System delivers radiation in small beamlets, enabling your doctor to devise a treatment plan that delivers an optimal dose of radiation to your tumour.

Proton Therapy

The precise nature of proton therapy makes it an excellent option for the treatment of certain head and neck cancers. Proton therapy delivers highly effective doses of radiation directly into the tumour, decreasing the risk of damage to delicate tissue in the head and neck. Vital physical functions such as vision, smell, taste and swallowing remain virtually untouched when a patient is treated with proton therapy.

APCC’s revolutionary Pencil Beam Scanning system delivers protons to the most complicated tumours in the head and neck area by focusing a narrow proton beam and essentially sculpting the radiation dose onto the tumour layer by layer.

To ensure the highest levels of clinical excellence and outcomes, our CMT often creates a multi-modal treatment roadmap.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy, to destroy tumour cells and stop their ability to grow and divide.

Biological, targeted and gene and immuno-therapy

Using drugs, bacteria, vaccines, or other methods to stimulate your immune system and/or kill or damage cancer cells. Clinical trials, which provide the opportunity to try innovative treatments. Talk to your doctor to discuss the possible options.

Rehabilitation
