MULTI-DISCIPLINARY EXCELLENCE

Our approach to cancer care is best defined by our unique Cancer Management Teams (CMTs). We believe that cancer is a complex enemy; conquering it demands the coming together of the finest experts in specific cancer groups.

Each CMT, at the Apollo Proton Cancer Centre, is made up of specialists who straddle diverse disciplines like Surgery, Radiation & Medical Oncology, Pathology, Rehabilitation and several others. A CMT is further fortified by world-class support staff like nurses, dieticians, therapists and clinical trial coordinators. These experts play a pivotal role in drawing up the treatment blueprint based on vast experience, the unique needs of the patients and the collective expertise of the team.

Paediatric Cancer

SOMETIMES NOTHING IS MORE PRECIOUS THAN A FRESH START. OUR FOCUS IN PAEDIATRIC IS BUILT ON THE PILLARS OF ensuring long term CURE AND QUALITY OF LIFE.

Cancer is a tough adversary at any stage of life, but it especially ominous when it strikes in the childhood years. Cancer in children is extremely challenging – besides the immediate goal of treating the cancer there is the added demand to ensure long-term quality of life and survivorship to the child. The matter is further compounded by the fact that children react differently to the conventional treatment methods.

Great advancements have been registered in paediatric oncology. Through collaboration, incisive learnings from clinical trials, great development in technology we have to come to a point where clinical outcomes have improved exponentially from where it was a few decades back.

The Paediatric Cancer Management Team at APCC is ideally suited to address the complex requirements of treating children with cancer. With experts from across disciplines, the team understands the nuances of Paediatric Oncology and is equipped to deliver specialized care at every stage of the treatment process.

The treatment procedures for Paediatric Oncology reflect the complexity and unique characteristics of childhood cancer themselves. The first thing we take into account at APCC is that in paediatric cancer we don’t just treat the child, the entire family is included in the process. Our proprietary CMT approach is optimized for this - child life specialists, dietitians, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, and counsellors are there for every need of the child and the family.

At APCC, the entire treatment experience will be customized to the need of the patient ensuring smooth treatment delivery right from management required for sedation during MRI and planning process, to treatment delivery every day. The Phillips ambient system is designed to ensure this making comfort and convenience a great priority. Our equipment uses dynamic lighting, projection and sound to transform a cold, impersonal environment into one that is soothing and comfortable.

Best-in-class clinical excellence is a non-negotiable in Paediatric Oncology. Issues like quality of life, which are important in all cases, become paramount while treating children. The core philosophy behind designing our treatment strategy is not just immediate alleviation but also ensuring health and happiness in the long term.

Surgery

In the multidisciplinary management approach, the surgical oncologist plays a crucial role in the Paediatric CMT, especially for solid cancers. Using the most sophisticated surgical procedures they operate to remove the entire tumour and the margin tissue around the tumour. The procedure leaves a negative margin which removes cancer in the healthy tissue.

Radiation Therapy

Proton Therapy

Paediatric cancers have high survival rates; almost 80% of the children treated beat cancer. While this statistic is a testament to the accelerated progress made in this niche field, it brings with itself a few pitfalls. There is a marked increase in the risk incidence of secondary cancers as patients become adults. Moreover, issues like cognitive disabilities, lagging learning function and poor memory are often the collateral damage of childhood cancers. These issues are largely the side effects of the treatment procedures themselves.

Conventional radiotherapy is shackled by the shortcomings of sub-optimal accuracy and scattering radiation beyond the tumour. Proton therapy negates these disadvantages. Guided by the Braggs Peak phenomenon and using sophisticated delivery mechanisms like Pencil Beam Scanning, Proton Beam Therapy is the forerunner in state-of-the-art cancer care for children. With no exit dosage, healthy tissue is not touched with radiation; Proton follows the principle of ‘if you don’t hit it, you don’t break it’. This is invaluable in treating cancers close to vital organs or complex tumours that needs to be sculpted with precise radiation beams. For instance, during cranio-spinal irradiation, Proton therapy delivers less radiation to the heart, lungs, and intestines.

Globally, the Proton Beam Therapy is marching to a position of pre-eminence in the treatment of paediatric cancer care. With APCC introducing this revolutionary treatment in this region, a new ray of hope emerges for children and families battling paediatric cancers. At APCC, Proton Beam Therapy is delivered by the powerful combination of a cutting-edge multi-room Proton Beam machine and a team of the very finest in radiation physics and comprehensive cancer care.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses drugs to attack cancer cells; they work by terminating the cancer cells’ ability to grow and divide. In our Paediatric CMT, Chemotherapy is administered by a paediatric oncologist.

Chemotherapy is an effectively used line of defence in treating paediatric cancers. Childhood cancers usually respond well to chemotherapy because they tend to be cancers that grow fast. In Paediatric Oncology, Chemotherapy is usually administered in any of the following ways:

Accurate prognosis demands that state-of-the-art diagnostics are employed to decide on the type and stage of the cancer. In the case of paediatric cancer a myriad factors play a significant role in the process of diagnosis. The child’s signs and symptoms as well as the age and medical condition are evaluated extensively before any of the following is used to get clarity on the cancer:
