Radiation Oncology is one of the commonly used treatment protocols in cancer care; it involves the use of high-energy particles – usually photons or revolutionary protons - to attack cancer cells.

Cancer spreads when affected cells divide and proliferate at a rapid rate; radiation therapy breaks down the DNA within these cancer cells and kills them, thus stemming the spread. Unlike other treatment forms like chemotherapy which affect the whole body, radiation therapy helps precise targeting of the affected cells.

When is Radiation Therapy Ideal

To cure early-stage cancer

Radiation therapy is ideally suited to cure cancers which are extremely sensitive to radiation. Exposure to radiation beams shrinks these cancers or removes them completely. In early stage cancer care, radiation is often used to complement chemotherapy, or as a precursor to surgery.


Critical adjunct in multi-modal therapy

Radiation therapy is used in combination with other forms to treatment like Medical or Surgical Oncology to attack cancer cells. Radiation can shrink tumours before chemotherapy or surgery; or attack residual cancerous tissue after other treatment modalities have been used.


To control cancers from recurring in other parts

Cancer has a demonstrated propensity to spread to different organs or parts of the body. Often clinicians can use empirical evidence to predict the course a cancer could take. Radiation is used preventively to make a pre-emptive strike before the cancer actually occurs.


To treat recurring cancers

If a person's cancer has returned (recurred), radiation might be used to treat the cancer or to treat symptoms caused by the advanced cancer.


Vital modality in palliative care for symptomatic relief

In very advanced stages of cancer, radiation is used to control the effects of the disease and alleviate the patient’s condition. Radiation therapy is effective to shrink tumours which reduce pain and hardship to the patient.


Tomotherapy

CUTTING EDGE TOMOTHERAPY THAT IS DRIVEN BY THE TRANSFORMATIVE RADIXACT PLATFORM

Tomotherapy is the combination of intensity modulated radiation delivered with the precision and accuracy of Computed Tomography scanning technology. This integrated approach is a powerful weapon in the fight against cancer, especially in the case of complex and hard-to-access tumours.

In Tomotherapy, radiation is delivered slice-by-slice. Extremely high-end imaging provides 4D volume images of the tumours that are moving. This allows precision targeting. A sophisticated motion monitoring technology continuously updates the affected part which is then targeted by the radiation beams. The advanced multi-leaf collimator shapes the beam, allowing for microscopic precision and accuracy.

At APCC, we are taking precision and excellence to the next level the revolutionary Radixact system. Radixact represents the new frontier of Tomotherapy; powered by state-of-the-art 3D CT imaging, it uses a linear accelerator to deliver a high dose radiation to the tumour with sub millimetre precision. This ensures that just the affected cells are targeted; surrounding healthy tissue is not exposed to radiation. The Radixact Tomotherapy system at APCC is the first of its kind sophisticated treatment modality available in Chennai.

Our dedicated CMTs evaluate each case and recommend the treatment roadmap based on the shape, size and stage of the cancer. In certain cases, Tomotherapy is deemed the optimal treatment modality, either as a stand-alone treatment or as an adjunct for proton therapy.

RayStation’s powerful feature-rich functionality makes our proton advantage even stronger. The RayStation supports a variety of treatment techniques and beam lines which augment the level of precision of our proton system.

The RayStation comes with Monte Carlo - it’s own proprietary dose engine. The Monte Carlo and pencil beam dose engines in RayStation are designed to be used in parallel, ensuring efficient and accurate dose calculation for all proton PBS planning needs.

RayStation provides leading tools for designing and optimizing actively scanned pencil beam proton treatment plans, including IMPT, single field uniform dose and distal edge tracking.
